Chic magazine is making money with the support they get on Facebook. They made a contest for looking for chic girls for their magazine and every girl could join this by posting their photos online, trying their luck to put themselves out there and see how many 'like's they get - see how many supporters/fans they have to qualify to the next round.
It is amazing the fact that through new media, it brought us together to help us get away from things that are bad for health. Other then facebook, people could also find support through twitter. The re-tweet button made for us to get more exposure when people re-tweet our tweet. For example when we re-tweet things that zouksingapore tweet for what's happening in the club on that particular night, it helps them spread the news and people who have not followed them, could follow them for more news from them.
People could also find support over a quarrel or fight, like how these guys did.
It happened on a regular saturday night in June 2010, an ugly argument between two guys at a poker party been dragged online, bitching about each other, attracting publics' attention. One shared it on Facebook, getting more than thousand over comments, the other then posted about it all over on his blog.It got popular, a company was initially sponsoring a poker party at wavehouse made it more interesting by letting them both settle the argument once and for all, people on which side of the team will wear black and white respectively to show their support on that night.

See how new media could make one's life more interesting. How things post online could spread easily and gain popularity in just a blink of an eye.

You have shared some ways that people and companies are using new media to garner support and publicise their events, etc.
ReplyDeleteDo you see this as a growing trend - that events, companies, etc would need to have a new media presence as well? Does it work the same for diffferent events, eg social, political, etc?
I'm wondering if the Aaron-Andrew face-off really happened? Or was it more like a publicity stunt? What do you think? Did you follow the whole case? How long did it last in cyberspace?
Do share more research material you have read with us.
I believe that the Aaron-Andrew face-off was a publicity stunt. If the company encourages such confrontations regularly, it would be seen as accepting heated arguments between large groups of the public and perhaps even physical violence would occur.
ReplyDeleteAs you have said a lot of big companies such as advertising agencies ,modelling agencies and even celebrities are seeking the support of the new media to announce the world their new events.
ReplyDeleteIt is true that the people can make supporting groups in social networking sites such as facebook. But it is still a question for me that the public is getting a real help out of them.
Your blog is quiet interesting as it the facts are given in the short and sweet manner.
New media has its benefits and its downsides. But the new media is mainly based on social networking sites. Blogging about it is still okay unless you also want the whole world to see your blog.
ReplyDeleteGood - organising parties and gatherings
Bad - I have said that in my blog.
If one wants to quit smoking, one should do it by one's own willpower, not by other people's choices. That is just peer pressure there if the smoker needs people to quit smoking with him. There might as well be a page that encourages people to smoke. If people join, they know they have friends doing it so they smoke. (I'm just saying)
And that video is just plain nonsensical. Firstly, ignore the guy who acts all high and mighty. Secondly, if the guy wants to leave, let him leave, what is the problem???? Now it has gone public because of their childish behavior. (sigh)
I agree that news can be spread very fast online such as on Facebook. I'm quite updated on events which I don't even hear of nowadays.
ReplyDeleteYes! Things are gaining popularity faster than usual too! Everyone's getting on the web to see what's the latest out there.
Isaac.
I honestly think the face-off was merely a publicity stunt. Because I do not think an ethical corporation would sponsor a fight between two teenagers.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's true that news on Facebook spreads quickly. Source: first-hand experience.
I do agree with your post that companies and organizations are using new media to do advertising. In this case, there must also be a targeted crowd for them, which is us. People are using new media almost everyday, thus making it an advertising opportunity for these companies and organization. And what we can say is that these really works. But at the same time, we should also not neglect those who are using other ways of advertising, like flyers.

I think more and more companies are trying to promote themselves on new media as it gives fast and up-to-date reach to their target audiences and besides, new media is FREE, rather than shooting advertisements that only target local audience, new media's reach is worldwide and speedy. The aaron and andrew argument was interesting though (:
ReplyDeleteYep,companies live 'smoove' use new media to market themselves, mainly facebook. Ireally like the aaron and andrew part.although ithink it's fake, it made me interested. publicity stunt to promote themselves? clever.
ReplyDeleteSometimes things may not be publicity stunt. It may have been purely just a quarrel and then a smart guy from a company decides to make use of opportunity and start promoting their company using this quarrel
ReplyDeleteThis is the good side of new media, i guess. I also agree that more and more companies start to use new media to get publicity for their product. I also think that the reason why companies use the internet to market their product is because it is free. - Rui Yong
